A couple of weeks ago, Sharlene and I attended the graduation ceremony for Daler, Farmingdale's very own service dog-in-training, at Canine Companions. It was a day filled with extraordinary emotion.
Admittedly, at first, I was originally reluctant to attend, as I feared it would bring back all the sadness I felt when I turned her in nearly six months ago. However, someone much wiser than I, someone I trust implicitly, told me that I needed to "get over myself" and move on. She told me that I would understand why by the end of the day.
This community, as a whole, including our students and staff, participated in her socialization. She walked the halls proudly, was on the receiving end of a seemingly unending number of belly scratches, and helped kids through some tough times. She just seemed to put a smile on the faces of those who needed her the most. You all took time out of your day to be a part of her upbringing, and I am forever grateful.
After getting a chance to know Lauren, Daler's new handler, it became clear that the advice I was given to attend the ceremony was sound. Daler will serve Lauren in a way that will enable her to live an independent life. I needed to attend that day to witness it for myself.
It seems fitting to share this with you today, as tomorrow is Thanksgiving. To be on the receiving end of such gratitude is the greatest Thanksgiving treat of all. I find myself thankful for two things: for this community's role in helping to raise Daler into the successful service dog she is today, and for my special friend, Deb, for convincing me to attend the graduation.
I wish you all a safe and restful Thanksgiving, as the craziness of the holiday season is right around the corner.
