Third-Grader from Northside Elementary Wins "Superintendent-for-a-Day" Raffle and Learns About Leadership

Jack Lamonte, a student at Northside Elementary School, won the prestigious "Superintendent-for-a-Day" raffle in December during the Dalers Deck the Halls breakfast. This unique opportunity allowed Jack to shadow Superintendent Paul Defendini and gain a firsthand understanding of the role's responsibilities.

On January 13, Superintendent Defendini surprised Jack in his third-grade classroom at Northside Elementary, presenting him with an official Superintendent ID badge and congratulating him on his achievement. Jack was instructed to report to the Superintendent’s office on January 23, 2025, dressed professionally. Mr. Defendini shared a detailed schedule for their day, filled with experiences aimed at giving Jack an insight into the life of a Superintendent.

With his supportive parents by his side, Jack enthusiastically shadowed Superintendent Defendini throughout the day—Daler, of course, was there too. His adventure began in Mr. Defendini's office, nestled within the Central Administrative wing of Howitt Middle School. There, Jack put pen to paper, signing a few official documents before setting off for a tour of the bustling Farmingdale High School. His eyes widened with excitement as he explored the culinary and robotics classrooms, the theater space that particularly captivated him, and even the cafeteria, where he chatted with the kitchen staff about a special meal for Northside.

The afternoon brought Jack back to his own stomping ground, Northside Elementary, where he had a friendly meeting with Principal Dr. Christopher Peterson. He made time to catch up with his former teachers and playfully requested a homework-free night for his classmates. Jack also joined his class for a unique music lesson, where the talented William Herbert, Bob Silverstein, and Madelyn Jimenez from the Farmingdale High School theater program joined them for a session filled with melodies and improvisation.

The day wound down at Howitt Middle School, where Jack was treated to a tour of the top-notch Aquatic Center. He then recorded a heartfelt audio message for his fellow Dalers, wrapping up an unforgettable day of discovery and learning.

Superintendent Paul Defendini couldn't help but express his admiration, “Jack’s professionalism and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. His attentiveness to staff, welcoming smiles, firm handshakes, and a keen eye for detail were remarkable. Having him accompany me throughout the day was an absolute pleasure.”

On January 14, 2025, Farmingdale School District hosted its highly anticipated Family Math Night at Howitt Middle School. This event brought together parents, children, and teachers in an atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm. Families enjoyed friendly competition, played games, and solved puzzles together.

Even those initially hesitant to participate in math activities found themselves drawn to Family Math Night's fun and engaging atmosphere. This event allows families to bond over a shared interest and develop a passion for math. Farmingdale educators aim to encourage a positive attitude and a lifelong love of learning by making math accessible, enjoyable, and engaging.

“We are thrilled to have hosted another successful Family Math Night,” said Dr. Jen Olsen, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. “We aim to inspire more families to join us on this learning adventure! Heartfelt thanks to the Farmingdale Teacher Center for making this event possible.”

The Farmingdale School District recognizes family engagement as a crucial component of a child's academic journey and encourages all parents to participate in the various Parent University events offered throughout the school year. Together, we guarantee every Daler is provided opportunities to help them attain academic success and reach their full potential.

On Saturday, November 23, nineteen students from the Farmingdale School District participated in this year's P.E.A.K.(Parents, Educators, and Kids) Festival at Freeport High School. The P.E.A.K. Festival, run by the NMEA (Nassau Music Educators Association), is the fourth-grade prelude to the Division 1 All County Music Festivals. P.E.A.K. provides excellent workshops focusing on choral singing, music concepts, All County level ensemble experience, skills, and techniques facilitated by a dedicated and talented staff of music professionals. Saltzman East Memorial music teacher Abigail Hesselton chaired the event, which 380 students across Nassau County attended. She worked with the clinicians and volunteers behind the scenes to ensure the festival ran smoothly. Our fourth-grade students, accompanied by Mrs. Irene Smykowski from Saltzman East Memorial and Ms. Deanna Cupolo from Northside and Woodward Parkway, favorite sessions of the day included cardio drumming, boomwhacker fun, and even therapeutic instruments where they were able to play singing bowls. The day ended with a performance of every student and parent showcasing what they learned during the day.

Let’s give a big round of applause to the fourth-grade students, their teachers, and parents for a delightful and musical day!
