A quiet focused energy fills the room as students gather around glowing towers of greens, carefully testing the water that nourishes their crop. Every Monday since February, 32 students in the fourth and fifth grades have transformed into young scientists and farmers through the Hydroponics Club.
These students are doing more than just watering plants; they are mastering the delicate balance of pH levels and researching which crops thrive in the Northeast climate. From setting up complex water flow systems to transferring hearty herbs and lettuce to the outdoor garden, these club members are gaining hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture.
Under the guidance of Christine Breuer and Denise Dimakopoulos, the students manage every detail of the growing process, including monitoring mineral levels and building garden markers. This experience fosters a deep sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship. As these young growers look toward the final harvest, they carry with them the skills to cultivate a greener future for our entire community.
