Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued an executive order with changes to the Farmingdale School District’s Budget Vote and Election for the 2020-21 school year. The school budget vote is now scheduled to take place by absentee ballot only on Tuesday, June 16, 2020.
Since the dates and deadlines have been revised, we are providing this summary of what to expect:
Postcard Notice
A postcard notice with details of the Board of Education budget vote and election, the Youth Council budget vote, and the Farmingdale Public Library trustee election will be mailed to homes at the end of May.
Trustee Election
Petition/affirmations were due to the District Clerk by email or regular mail by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2020.
Legal Notices
Legal notices were published in the Farmingdale Observer and the Massapequa Post on Wednesday, May 6 and Friday, May 8, 2020 respectively, with a second publication the week of May 20, 2020.
Budget Adoption
The budget adoption will be held remotely on Tuesday, May 19, at 8 p.m. and live-streamed to the public. More information about logging into the meeting will be available on our website prior to the start of the meeting.
Budget Newsletter
An abridged budget newsletter will be mailed in the coming weeks. Residents can also find information pertaining to the budget on the district’s website.
Public Hearing
The public budget hearing will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at 8 p.m. and live-streamed to the public. More information about logging into the meeting will be available on the district’s website prior to the start of the meeting.
Absentee Ballots
Absentee ballots will be mailed to all district registered voters beginning May 28, 2020.
Budget Notice
The 6-day notice will be mailed to homes on or about Wednesday, June 3, 2020.
Budget Vote
The election and budget vote originally scheduled for May 19, 2020 will place on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. There will be no voting at the polls. The vote will take place exclusively by absentee ballot, which will be mailed to qualified voters in the district with a postage-paid return envelope. The absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk, Mary Rogers, no later than 5 p.m. on June 16, 2020. Ballots will be accepted by USPS mail, and in a designated ballot lock box— to be located at the east entrance of Howitt Middle School along Van Cott Avenue— on June 8 and June 9 only. Sealed ballots can be dropped off between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. All ballots will be counted by hand and the date to announce results has not been established yet.
Who is considered a qualified voter?
Qualified voters must be 18 years old or older on the day of the vote, a United States citizen and a resident of the Farmingdale Union Free School District for 30 days immediately preceding the election. All qualified registered voters in your household are entitled to an absentee ballot. If you do not receive the correct number of ballots, promptly email the District Clerk, Mary Rogers, mrogers@farmingdaleschools.org

How do I register to vote if I am not presently on the voting roll?
You can register with the Board of Elections by submitting an on-line application for voter registration with the Department of Motor Vehicles athttps://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/electronic-voter-registration- application.
How many Board of Education trustee seats are on the ballot this year? How many Library Board trustee seats?
There are two (2) Board of Education trustee seats up for election this year, each for a three-year term starting July 1, 2020. Candidates run at large, meaning that the two trustees with the highest number of votes will win the election. Candidates' names will be listed on the ballot in alphabetical order by last name. There is one (1) trustee seat available on the Public Library board. This is a five-year term.
