School Board Recognition Week

The New York State School Boards Association recognizes School Board Recognition Week, a dedicated time to promoting awareness and understanding of the vital work performed by local school board members.
Public schools form the bedrock of our communities and our country. Democracy thrives with educated citizens capable of critical thinking and civil discourse, and local school boards are ultimately responsible for guiding student success.
“It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these public servants devote countless hours to making sure our schools help every child learn at a higher level,” said Paul Defendini, Superintendent of Schools. “They make tough decisions every month and spend many hours studying education issues and regulations to provide the accountability our community expects.”
Superintendent Defendini noted that the primary role of the school board is to drive student achievement by:
- Establishing Vision: Developing a shared vision and strategic goals for the district.
- Aligning Resources: Ensuring strategies, budget resources, policies, and programs directly align with district goals.
- Monitoring Progress: Assessing student achievement data and maintaining public accountability.
- Fostering Culture: Supporting a safe, healthy, and supportive environment in which to work and learn.
- Ensuring Leadership: Evaluating district leadership to foster continuous improvement.
“School board members give Farmingdale citizens a direct voice in education decision-making. Even though we make a special effort to show our appreciation this week, their contribution is a year-round commitment,” Superintendent Defendini said.
