Finding Green

Northside Elementary’s Sensory Room is proving to be a game-changer for student success, helping children manage big emotions and quickly return to classroom instruction. Created through an ongoing partnership between teachers, instructional aides, school psychologists, and occupational therapists, the room equips students with hands-on tools to recognize their body's signals and regulate effectively.
Since the introduction of the room, Northside Elementary has seen a noticeable drop in daily student visits to the psychologist's office for students who would typically “just need a break”. While it is a proactive resource, the space is also essential when challenges arise. In these situations, staff gently guide students to the sensory room for a structured break, giving them the space and tools to regulate with supportive supervision.
Rooted in The Zones of Regulation framework, the space uses visual guides to help students identify their feelings and work toward a central goal: Finding Green. Reaching the "Green Zone" means a student feels calm, balanced, and ready to head back to class and learn.
Key Impacts on the School Day
- Empowering Self-Regulation: Guided by staff, students learn to utilize the room proactively, working through restlessness or stress before it interrupts their learning time.
- Bringing Solutions Directly into the Classroom: When teacher aides notice a specific tool consistently helping a student, they bring it directly to the child's classroom desk. Having their favorite tools close by allows many students to regain focus without leaving the room.
- Hands-On Regulation Tools: The room features accessible items like kinetic sand, peanut balls, balance pods, and visual breathing charts that make regulation an active, engaging process.
Navigating tough moments requires practice. When students build skills to manage their own regulation, they return to their desks confident, focused, and ready to learn. The sensory room provides the vital foundation that makes these successful transitions possible.
